Hallmark Ornament Changes 'Gay' in 'Don We Now Our Gay Apparel' to 'Fun'
Greeting card company Hallmark is taking some flak after it changed the lyrics of "Deck the Halls" on one of its 2013 Christmas ornaments from "Don we now our gay apparel" to "Don we now our FUN apparel." The lyric appears on an ornament designed to look like an ugly Christmas sweater. FoxNews.com said the criticism was appearing on Hallmark's Facebook page, citing one woman who described herself as a Gold Crown Rewards member as saying that by changing the lyric, they made an unnecessary political statement. Hallmark issued a statement explaining the history of the song, dating back to a time, quote, "when 'gay' meant festive or "merry." It continued, "Today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation. The trend of wearing festively decorated Christmas sweaters to parties is all about fun, and this ornament is intended to play into that, so the planning team decided to say what we meant: 'fun.' That's the spirit we intended and the spirit in which we hope ornament buyers will take it."
