People are eating cicadas emerging right out of their backyard, here's how

Yes, you read that title correctly.

I'm sure you've heard all about the cicadas known as the Great Eastern Brood emerging from the ground after 17 years of tunneling and feeding beneath the soil.

Well, the weather has finally warmed up enough for swarms to begin making appearances across the east coast and some have made use of their visit by eating them. Seems a bit taboo, but cicadas are eaten in many cultures and have historically been a food source for some Native American tribes.

How do cicadas taste? University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp describes the taste of cicadas saying, "They have a buttery texture, a delicious, nutty flavor, probably from the tannins, from the roots of the trees on which they fed." Raupp also says that they're going to be good with a Merlot.
